Laguna Tools 6" Jointer Wedgebed design ShearTec II Cutterhead
RatingAmazing qualityAfter years of fighting with a straight blade Delta, and having a ton of trouble getting a pile of hickory flat, I upgraded to the Laguna Tools 6" Wedgebed Jointer with ShearTec II. Within minutes of having it setup, it needed a few minutes of checking and everything was flat and square.
I passed a few hickory boards and I realized I made the right choice with this machine.
While not a big deal, 2 issues I have are the dust collection isn't as good as it could be. Shavings makes it out in a few places, even with a 650 cfpm collector on a 5 foot hose. Maybe time for an upgrade :) I also felt the mobile base, while helpful doesn't hold the machine as sturdy as i would like. I did utilize the screw down tabs on the sides to lock it in place to some blocking.
RatingVery nice fit and finishThe jointer was shipped in two separate boxes, and although the packaging had some holes and tears, everything inside was undamaged. The instructions could be better, but it doesn't hinder putting the unit together. It will take two people to comfortably lift and place the bed onto the base without damaging it. I ran some Carneywood through it immediately after setup, and it does a great job, with no tear out to speak off. This is my second helical tool(13" planer), and I look the finish it provides.
RatingI would buy it again, had no trouble assembling by myself, the jointed surfaces are excellent in my opinion, this is my second Laguna tool. The two packages arrived in good condition delivered by ABF. All contents, paint surface, machine surfaces were in excellent condition. The machine and contents were all in plastic bags and surrounded by thick Styrofoam. .No damage noted. I was pleasantly surprised that Laguna included a set of push pads, some wrenches and tools for assembly. Not all, but enough that with basic shop tools I could assemble the jointer. The built-in mobility cart is adequate. A set of floor leveler would help with the jointer's stability. Not a big issue for me as the machine is not real heavy. There are flanges on the base at two ends with holes. . Using these, I may mount the machine on a larger, heavy surface and use a third party cart for mobility. The instructions need attention! I think these are not updated and in some areas are wrong, both the photos and text. This is my first experience with a jointer assembly and use and I have made a lot of mistakes but thankfully there is YouTube. I really like the SheaTec II cutterhead. When I get the technique correct, it makes fine jointed surfaces. I think in a short order with more practice I will be a cleaning up the faces and edges quickly with less mistakes. I need to remember that mistakes are a part of wood working and I am a self taught DIY.
RatingIT ROCKSI am very pleased with my Laguna JOINTER .IT makes short work of squaring boards. The shear tec head makes finishing very easy virtually no sanding needed. Delivery was very fast and set up was a breeze. The only thing i see wrong is Laguna should make a little holder for the push blocks. I built one out of some scrap lumber. All in all this machine is great. I've already built my wife a new computer desk. I give this Jointer 5 stars..Michael from Montana.
