Laguna Tools 14|12 Bandsaw
RatingLove the saw; couple of set up problems. When I first tried to slice some veneers, I found that the table was not square to the fence. Nothing in the manual covers this. I called Laguna, and was called back by technical support within a half hour (an excellent result). The tech told me there are two set screws in the fence support to adjust for perpendicularity with the table. In mine, the holes are there, but there were no set screws. I am now waiting for Laguna to send them.
RatingGreat toolGreat tool, cuts like a dream with a sharp blade. Resawing a breeze. A better fence and longer rails to allow use on both sides of the blade would be a improvement. Finding parts numbers was my biggest problem. I still don't have the correct part after paying to have several delivered.
RatingExcellent Machine, Everything I was looking forI read all the reviews over and over, read the suggestions for watching the setup video because the guide wasn't very good and bought one. Am I glad I did. I make Shaker boxes and have been trying to make the thin material needed with a Delta 14" with riser block and a Highland Hardware Wood Slicer blade. I dreaded every time I had to set it up to try and cut repetitive thin strips.
The Laguna 14/12 bandsaw works great, and the detailing and finishing of the machine are superior. So far I have only used the ReSaw King (carbide tipped) blade, which is great.
I now look forward to thin slicing material.
Ratingnice saw, poor blade guidestitle sais it all.
saw is very good. solid powerful and works well.
ceramic guides are terrible. they are flimsy, hard to adjust and produce awful screeching sounds when blade rubs against the ceramic surface of the guides.
I have few other minor issues with the saw: fence is our of square and the table isn't straight. will work with laguna to solve these.
RatingSolid quality, good valueDespite rather obscure instructions, the saw assembled almost without incident. The only glitch was the mobility kit, for which the instructions were poor and the attachment of the retractable wheel problematic due to difficult access for the fasteners. However, the rest of the assembly was easy and the final alignment very straighforward. The saw runs fairly quitely and smoothly, without noticable vibration and with excellent power in hardwood. Dust collection is good, but not outstanding as significant dust settles on the lower guides and dribbles outside the machine from there. However, the manufacturing quality is impressive, at least compared with my Grizzly products, which tend to be very roughly made with flaking paint everywhere. The only minor complaints I have are that the table machining is a little rough (but adequate for a bandsaw), with the t-slot cutting rather crude, while the manual reads as if it were directly translated by Google from the Chinese. However, other parts have excellent discussions on blade alignment controversies and the like that are clearly written in standard English. It is a puzzle to me why the Laguna folks in California don't take a couple of hours to edit their manuals!
RatingGreat sawI received my saw a couple of weeks ago. The saw is packaged very well. Assembly and setup are very straight forward. I know that a lot of folks have commented on the poor owner's manual. I looked it over, and it seems fine to me. For the assembly and setup, I simply followed the VERY detailed videos that Laguna provides on their website for the 14|Twelve.
They can be found here:
They literally have 14 videos that cover every detail, from unboxing, to assembly, to setup. Just take your tablet or laptop into the shop and follow along, it's that simple.
I did have a hiccup with the freight company that was to deliver my saw. Everything turned out fine in the end. I only mention this to point out that both WoodWerks and Laguna responded within the hour to my inquiry. Great customer service will keep me coming back. Thanks!
RatingExcellantWell made, nice fit except for mounting the saw onto the stand. There is a problem with the mounting bolt keeping the lower door from opening. It either needs to be removed or use something to grind it down so the door can open and close.
Ratingexcellent performing bandsawI upgraded my bandsaw and wow!!! did I upgrade ... really nice saw
RatingSolid MachineAfter having to wait for this saw, it was well worth the time. Fine product and smooth operations. Although I had to square the table top to the saw it cuts to perfection. I can see that Laguna needs to keep a close eye on quality control (minor issues) it could get out of hand in the future. One bolt in the base that holds the saw to the stand gets in the way of opening the bottom door. No big problem, but that kind of small thing can lead to bigger issues in the quality control line. However, I love the saw.
RatingGreat SawRecieved our Laguna 12/14 saw a few days ago and could not be happier with it. Powerful, accurate and a joy to use. My wife is into building bird houses and this saw makes quick work of cutting pieces. And I feel that her use of this saw makes it safer for her.
RatingGreat saw questionable customer supportWhen I placed my order it was backordered, and it took almost a month for it to arrive. Upon arrival it was packaged extremely well, and there was no damage to speak of. As others have stated have an extra set of hands to help unboxed and assemble. I couldn't wait because I was so excited, and had to play. At 312 packaged, and 260 unboxed it isn't a light weight.
Set up was straightforward, although as others have previously stated the directions aren't the greatest. But anyone with mechanical aptitude shouldn't have any issues. Once assembly was completed I attempted to remove the throat plate, it wouldn't budge. So a long regular screwdriver was employed to gently pry it out. I then took a file to all four sides to deburr said plate. Once my blade was installed (TimberWolf 3/4" w/ 3tpi) I reinstalled the plate to level it. Well it was warped/ bent, and no matter how much I fussed with the levelling screws I couldn't get it true. The other issue I encountered was the bottom door making contact with saw to base bolt. Tried numerous solutions to no avail. I can say resawing 10-12" round maple and ash has not been an issue. Runs like a champion, and asks for more.
Contacted WoodWerks, and was advised to contact Laguna directly. ( Rep at WoodWerks was quite pleasant, and friendly) So I contacted Laguna and it was three days before I heard back from them. My technical support consisted of a rather curt individual who spoke to me like I was mentally challenged. When I told him I tried everything he suggested his attitude declined further. But at least I was able to get a replacement throat plate.
The saw itself is absolutely wonderful (besides the two hiccups), and I would recommend it highly. I do however think it's BS that it doesn't come with a blade. The kicker is about the time I received my saw several other companies had it for the exact same price. With either a free light or the coveted Resaw King blade, which had me kicking myself in the bum!
Ratinggorgeous machine... The world's worst and most frustrating wners manualI have owned at least 8 band saws over my 50 years of woodworking, and I have never had more frustration and putting a machine together. If Laguna reads any of these reviews, here's a message that they ought to pay attention to: an experience like this, for me and I'm sure I don't speak just for myself, the quality of the machine notwithstanding, will certainly impact the excitement with which I share about it's acquistion. The reason why Apple products, & I really think Laguna could have a shot at comparabl quality, have such loyal followers.is because of the attention to detail, the insistence that every aspect of the customers experience, from receipt to unpacking to being guided through setup, to the use and feel of the machine is a quality experience...every aspect they know contributes to the impression and experience of their customers. For the lack of putting a little time and attention into creating an elegant and consumer friendly manual,, along with as Larry mentioned above, the simple and generous gesture of including a single band saw blade, will end up costing them way more, I'm sure, then they are aware. Bottom line, while I'm delighted to have the saw in my shop, the bad taste after spending well over 3 frustrating hours, with a friend helping by the way, that it took to assemble and adusting the saw, will remain for quite a while.
RatingGood saw, great value. When the saw was delivered, one side of the cardboard box was almost torn off, but the styrofoam packing did its job, and there was not any noticeable damage to the saw or its components. The saw went together pretty quickly, and I used a hoist to lift it up onto a custom stand that I had built for it. I had a couple of minor issues similar to what other reviewers have discussed: throat insert needed filing for a proper fit, and the fence was not square to the table. I e-mailed Laguna, and they told me that there are now two set screws in the fence support that can be used to square the aluminum fence to the table (this is not in the manual).
The saw cuts well, and is relatively quiet and smooth. I can really tell the difference that the cast iron wheels make compared to my previous saw. I also like the ceramic guides (much easier to get adjusted than ball bearings). I do find it somewhat tight when adjusting the lower guides.
The only other concern that I have is that the 110V outlet on the backbone of the saw (for a utility light), was wired backwards ("hot" and "neutral" wires were switched). This is not a big problem, but it is a potential safety hazard. I was able to remove the outlet and correct the wiring myself.
Ratingwhat does customer sevice mean? The most frustrating thing about this saw is the absolutely TERRIBLE manual. The text and the pictures are seldom on the right page, the photos in black and white are difficult to interpret, there is no parts list so you don't know if any small parts are missing from plastic packs. A simple comment like "install 8mm bolts" would make it easier that "mount with fixings". The setup is straightforward once you have done it. The guides are great and the tensioning system works well. Installation of the blade is straightforward. My saw has a lower cover that hits the mounting bolt when you open it. The anodized throat plate was oversized and I had to pry it out to put in the blade. I had to grind it down to be able to get it in and out. The plate was not level with the table and the set screws are an odd (and unknown) size. Laguna, by the way is SO CHEAP they don't include a blade with the saw. I am running a couple of Timberwolf blades and they work well. There is a nice window to check if the blade tracking is right except it is very hard to see inside the case - you have to shine a flashlight in. The work light is overpriced as is the mobile base. I use a SnapOn LED light from Costco.
The manual has nothing in it about how to actually use the saw. Now you might say that this is hardly an entry level saw but it is my first and all saws are a little different. An overview of the features would be useful and the least I'd expect. They also do not seem to realize that the web exists or that a DVD could be provided. I got a nice DVD for my Easy Tools carbide wood tools. They cost a tenth of this saw.
The saw is absolutely a thing of beauty though. I really like working with it. Too bad Laguna only goes 3/4 of the way with the idea of customer service - you should feel like they have thought about how you are going to use this tool and go that little extra step to help you feel good about your purchase.
RatingGreat SawI added the mobile base and the light and set it up without any assistance (OK - the wife helped guide the bolts for the table installation). The printed instructions were not very good but the Laguna website has GREAT video instructions for this saw from unpacking to dialing it in.
WOOD-WERKS CUSTOMER SERVICE IS GREAT!!
RatingBest bandsaw for the money hands down!I considered the Rikon 10-325 and the Laguna 14-12 band saws. As far as features go, the Laguna wins in every way aside from no storage in the base. The Jet bandsaw that is comparable to the 14-12 is several hundred dollars more, so I did not consider it at all. I read glowing reviews about the 14-12 and upon getting one myself, can confirm that it is an awesome machine. The selling points for me were:
-the rip capacity
-the double fence
-ceramic blade guides
I would highly recommend this saw to anyone!
RatingLaguna rocks! If you are i the market to purchase a bandsaw this is the best. Customer service is outstanding. The Laguna replaces the Jet band saw which was damaged in the tornado. Always wanted a Laguna, now i've got one! If you're looking for a bandsaw, this is the leader of the pack. Buy it!
Ratinga great product at a great price! I coudn`t be more pleasedSo many times when you buy a tool there is one feature that you feel could have been designed better, but not on this bandsaw. I couldn't be more pleased or impressed with with every aspect of this product.I've used many other bandsaws and none have performed as well. I would highly reccomend this product!
Ratingexellent bandsaw, worth every pennyeverything is square and flat, the frame is solid as can be, the guides and the fence are top quality and adjust very quickly and easily. No wimpy screws that strip out or break. I set up and played with the adjustments for a half hour while installing a resaw king blade and it cut straight.
Overall very impressed and happy with this saw.
RatingGreat BandsawSaw arrived with concealed damage, base was bent on one side.
Found this after unpackaging. After "consulting" with Laguna, used sledge hammer to straighten. Not perfect but good enough to assemble w/o problem. BTW, by having the shipping box on its side and supported by some 2x6's I was able to unpack, then assemble, and erect by myself. This is my first bandsaw and installation of blade, adjustments, were easy. Initial trial cuts were perfect and today I use for curved stool legs. Customer service at Laguna sent me two free blades due to the bent stand. Much better to have more blades than go through the process of repackaging and returning for replacement.
Rating1412 bandsaw a good value works greatlooks good, works great, easy blade change, get light and wheels both work well.
RatingGreat first time band saw.Took a while to get it because of the demand for it. I received it right to my garage shop. The online video setup was fantastic. It guided you through every step. I order the pro wheel system and it works great in moving the saw around when you need additional space. I only wished I had ordered was the light too. It is quiet and run smoothly.
The only con is the dust collection. Even with the 4 inch dust port, a lot of the saw dust is not collected.
RatingExcellent SawJust completed setting up the saw and making some initial cuts. Setup took about 2 hr but was easy because of the high quality of the saw. The intitial cuts (rips, curves, and resaw) were all impressive. Will know more as I continue to use.
RatingVery niceWorkmanship and features are head and shoulders above the Rikon which now resides in a corner of my shop. Blade guides and table adjustment features are excellent. Although it is a 110 volt model I have yet to find this to be an issue. Plenty of power for all the resawing I have done so far.
RatingGreat SawI ordered this saw Friday morning and it was delivered Tuesday morning. Wow. As far as setup, the instructions for the mobile base could be better, the rest of the setup was straight forward. I had the saw up and running in about two hours. This is my first band saw and I was surprised by the number of adjustments there are on these things. I installed the 3/4 inch Resaw King blade and was pleased with my first try at resawing. The High/Low fence is great.
RatingThe 14/12 BandsawI would like to say that it was a real pleasure to place this online order with Woodwerks. The saw was freighted to me in Bloomington, IL for $49 and I had it two days after placing my order.
I had read numerous reviews on this new Laguna model and I was in the market to upgrade my 7 year old 14-6 Rikon. The 110V was a plus for me as I didn't really want to add another 220V line in my shop.
The saw was extremely well packaged and with the help of a couple of friends
(I have a crappy lower back) got it on its stand and within 1 1/2 hours I had finished the initial setup with a 5/8" shear force blade. Setting up the ceramic guides was a breeze. Everything about the saw from the gauge of steel used for the stand, to the overall fit, finish and choice of materials ( i.e. cast iron wheels)
for the saw itself was exceptional. Both my friends who are studio artists
( sculptors) remarked about this as well. A bonus- the darn thing just LOOKS sexy! And as a designer/craftsman, cabinetmaker that's something I really appreciate. I haven't really put it through its paces yet, but I after setup I did resaw a 6" wide piece of hard maple, talking off a 1/4" slice. VERY accurate and very smooth. It was like cutting, butter - to quote a cliche! I will add another review when I have gotten over the honeymoon and pushed its capabilities.
